[va-bird] NVBC Highland Co. Weekend, June 20-22

VA-Birders,

Our Northern Virginia Bird Club summer trip to Highland Co. was held last
weekend. We went about 2 weeks later than usual because I went to the
American Birding Association Convention in Eugene, OR, the first week in June.
(It
was a very good convention with good field trips and blue skies every day!)
The weather in Highland Co. over the weekend was mixed, with good weather on
Friday afternoon, a little drizzle on Saturday, and lovely blue skies with just
a
little breeze on Sunday. Most disappointing was the weather up on F.R.
(Forest Road) 55 and Paddy's Knob on Saturday, where it was cold and very
cloudy
all morning.

Highlights for the 10 members on the trip included Ruffed Grouse (on F.R.
55), Least Flycatchers, Loggerhead Shrikes, Cliff Swallows, Common Ravens,
Horned Lark, Black-capped Chickadees, Golden-winged Warbler (seen briefly by 2
of us), Rose-breasted Grosbeaks at the Beverages' feeders in Monterey, and
Bobolinks. We did not find the Dickcissels reported on the VSO Foray. We
didn't
hear any Mourning Warblers on F.R. 55; in fact, we heard and saw very few
birds up there, which I suspect was due in large part to the weather. However,
we
had excellent looks there at 2 Ruffed Grouse, which were Life Birds for
several people in our group.
