VA Birders,
Sunday night, after our NVBC Chincoteague Weekend, a friend and I spent
the night in Chesapeake, where I received a call from Mary Kaye Rubin and her
husband Marv, who had been on our trip and then went back up to Chincoteague
after we birded the CBBT. Mary Kaye reported that they stopped at Eastern
Shore
of VA NWR on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 12) and found the drake Eurasian Wigeon
at the Ramp Road pond--no doubt the same bird found by the Koppels on Monday.
On Monday morning (Feb. 13), after checking Craney Island, we went to
Ridgeway Park in Hampton to look for the Eurasian Wigeon which had been
reported
there, but we arrived at midday and we did not find the wigeon. However, we
did find the BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS which had also been reported.
Craney Island was a waste of time, as we found very few birds there. The
only birds we saw in the impoundments were some gulls, and the only birds in
the river were a few BLACK and SURF SCOTERS, some BUFFLEHEADS, and a small
raft of RUDDY DUCKS. Our only raptor was an AM. KESTREL.
Good birding,
Val Kitchens
