Hello VA-Birders:

Fourteen members of the Northern Virginia Bird Club turned out this morning
for a walk in Riverbend Park (a Fairfax County park that is adjacent to
Great Falls Park).  We started out in the meadow near the Nature Center
where we saw our prize bird, a BLACK-BILLED CUCKOO, in the lower branches of
one of trees clustered near the little man-made pond, in the center of the
field.  Not only did we get good looks from every angle at the Black-billed
Cuckoo (which for some of us was a life bird) but close to the Black-billed
was a Yellow-billed Cuckoo, so we had a wonderful opportunity to compare the
two almost side by side.

We spent about two hours in the meadow, where, along with the cuckoos, we
saw six warbler species, two very colorful Great Crested Flycatchers, a
Least Flycatcher, some recently-fledged House Wrens, and a Bald Eagle and
two Black Ducks flying over.  When we left the meadow and went down to the
river, the same eagle (with a missing primary) appeared again, but not the
Black Ducks. The surprise bird on the water, spotted by Ralph Wall, was a
Lesser Yellowlegs who was probing  on a rock in mid-river.  Along the path
leading upriver from the Visitor Center we came upon two additional warbler
species; an Acadian Flycatcher; two Yellow-throated Vireos, one of whom we
saw feeding the other; a Wood Thrush, detected by Kurt Gaskill; and a Belted
Kingfisher.

All in all we counted 50 species:
