To elaborate a little more on Tyler's post; The Center for Conservation Biology
at the College of William and Mary began its 11th year of NSWO migration
monitoring on the Lower Delmarva Peninsula on 22 October. In the past 10
years, over 2,500 NSWO have been banded and more than 96 foreign retraps and
returns have been recorded.
The Lower Delmarva station is a constant effort station that bands
all night, every night as long and the weather is cooperating. We
typically open around 1800 and close at 0600 and run from 25 October
until 15 December (started a little early this year). Owls are trapped at 3
stations located within a 10 km2 area at the southern tip of the Delmarva
Peninsula near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. At each station we use a
continuous line of 6 12m mist nets erected along an east/west axis, with an
audio lure located at the center.
I will leave it up to Tyler to post somewhat regular updates on the monitoring
throughout the season.
