Wow, I'm glad that my wife invited me to lunch today!  During an extended
lift (12 pm) of the James River Bridge (Rt. 17 between Isle of Wight Co. &
Newport News), I was able to observe 50+ Northern Gannets whirling and
feeding within 150 feet of the bridge.

I have only seen gannets in the James River once before and they weren't
this far up the river.  There appeared to be NO birds on the Surry side of
the bridge.

After having lunch and recrossing the bridge at 1pm (gannets still there) I
decided to run home to check the Nansemond River.  Sure enough, while
scoping from my yard, I saw one gannet almost up to the Nansemond River
Bridge (Rt. 17 again).  This turns out to be a new yard bird (#188) and one
I've been waiting for a long time.

I knew that the right conditions (NE winds and abundant bait in the rivers)
sometimes bring them out of the Chesapeake Bay and I was very lucky to be
in-town when these birds appeared.

Good Birding!
