While birding the common area in my subdivision near Warrenton Va about 8:30
this morning, I checked an area where I thought I had heard a Mourning Warbler
a couple of days ago. Sure enough, I heard it again, but it was way back in
the briar and honeysuckle thicket. I didn't figure that I would get a chance
to confirm my "diagnosis" when suddenly it left the thicket and landed about
twenty feet from me in a small tree about four feet off of the ground. There I
watched it sing for about fifteen minutes.
Otherwise this was kind of a slow day though I also watched a Wilson's warbler
for a short time (these seem to be everywhere this year...this was a life bird
for me last week, but since then I've seen at least ten). Last week I had two
Alder flycatcher's in the same area.
I think it was Todd who was looking for a confirmation of sharpshin hawks in
Fauquier. Saturday evening I was standing near my feeder when an accipiter
made a pass through, aborting when it saw me. I suspect a sharpshin, but I was
as surprised as the hawk and didn't get a great look. It was a little larger
than a blue jay.
