VA BIRDers,
Thanks to the keen eyes of Marc Ribaudo, we both got to observe a quiet
Mourning Warbler near the Prothonotary Swamp boardwalk at the Car Top Boat
Launch area of Leeslyvania SP this morning.
We started the morning before 0600 in the Possum Pt area, then moved through
Julie Metz before arriving at Leeslyvania SP. We left at about noon and I
continued on to visit the Occoquan Bay NWR (formerly the Harry Diamond Lab
grounds) in Woodbridge. At this last stop I got to try the new Wildlife
Drive (Sat & Sun only, 12-4) which allows people to visit in car only some
newly opened areas at OBNWR.
In addition to the Mourning Warbler, today's highlights were No. Bobwhite at
OBNWR, Solitary Sandpiper and Spotted Sandpiper on the edges of the big ash
pond in the Possum Pt area, YB Cuckoo in various places included OBNWR,
Willow Flycatchers at OBNWR, Swainson's Thrush at Lee SP, Magnolia Warbler at
Possum Pt and Lees SP, Blackpoll Warblers at all locations, Black & White
Warblers singing at 3 locations along Cockpit Rd (today is within the safe
date range for breeding, so all are possible breeders), several Am. Redstarts
and Canada Warblers, Summer Tanager at Lees SP, and Blue Grosbeak at Julie
Metz and Lee SP. Below are the statistics for some species of general
interest.
