This afternoon I found a male Mourning Warbler at the Winkler botanical
preserve in the City of Alexandria. The bird was quietly foraging near the
edge of the main trail that runs between the big pond near the entrance,
uphill to a smaller pond. Other birds present were a pair of Great Crested
Flycatchers; Gray Catbird and Northern Cardinal bathing in a stream, and a
Chipping Sparrow. A Carolina Chickadee came within five feet of me,
checking me out, while I stood near a wooden bridge. While I was there I
saw a Peregrine Falcon fly high overhead.
The Winkler preserve is a privately run nature reserve located on Roanoke
Avenue, on the east side of Beauregard Street between Seminary Road and
Sanger Avenue. It has a maturing deciduous forest that is managed to remove
exotic species and Poison Ivy. There is a pond with a waterfall, a smaller
pond (which hosted a Great Blue Heron), a native plants meadow, and many
trails. I understand that there are summertime youth education activities.
The hours are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.
Nearby, at a pond on Nottingham Drive behind the ?Radisson Hotel, I noted a
few Canada Geese and one of the Swan x Canada Goose hybrids I saw last fall.
