Va Birders,
Because I am in the high risk category for West Nile Virus, and because I too
have heard many negatives about DEET, I considered purchasing some electronic
mosquito repellants which I saw advertised.
Before purchasing, I used a search engine, entering "electronic mosquito
repellants" and was led to the CDC website referred to in the previous post on
West Nile and DEET.
The CDC says that electronic mosquito repellants are useless.
I was impressed with the fact that the CDC considers DEET to be the most
effective repellant for both mosquitoes and ticks, presenting no danger to the
user if applied properly at dosages in the 23 - 25% range.
That was about two months ago. Since then I have used DEET every time I've
been out birding (I've been in some very tick & mosquito-infested places), and
have had neither a mosquito bite nor found any ticks on me.
CDC recommends showering or otherwise washing DEET from the skin ASAP after
exposure is past.
