[va-bird] More Piedmont Red-breasted Mergansers, 18 March 2002

Greets...

I stopped by Germantown Reservoir (CM Crockett Park) in Fauquier County this
evening. Was collapsing my scope at about six o'clock when a flock of fast
moving ducks flew in. Once they settled on the water, I got a look at 27
Red-breasted Mergansers, easily my highest count for the county. Two were
adult males, frequently engaging in the neck-stretch body-dip courtship
display that they do. There were a fair amount of birds that were first
winter males coming into a more typical adult male plumage; white patches
were showing up on their backs, their heads were darkening, and the breast
was getting to be a rich brown.

Three American Tree Sparrows were also hanging in there, though this is the
first time I have had that species there this winter. No Purple Martins yet,
the main reason for my visit.

Cheers...

Todd
