Greetings
Some 20-odd souls showed up before 5:00 am (except for a few late ones) at
the Lynnhaven Marina for the second Virginia Beach Pelagic Birding trip with
Brain Patteson. It was a gorgeous day on the water with only a little breeze
and lots of sunshine. For me it was my fist pelagic trip and I was very
happy with the birds saw. Several new lifers (4) and some good marine life
(loggerhead and leather-back turtles and dolphins). I had a great time
watching birds and meeting other bird watchers from the area. We saw the
following species:
Lynnhaven Marina Area:
Brown Pelican 1
Double-crested Cormorant
Great Blue Heron 1
Laughing Gull
Herring Gull
Great Black-backed Gull
Black Skimmer > 75
Rock Pigeon (first official bird of the trip :) )
Norfolk Canyon Area -- Some 70 miles out from the coast (plus or minus a few
miles):
Wood Duck 1
Pied-billed Grebe 1
Cory's Shearwater >150
Audubon's Shearwater 7+
Wilson's Storm-Petrel 48+
Red-necked Phalarope 40-50
Red Phalarope 1
Herring Gull (we saw a few)
Common Tern 1
Bridled Tern 5 (many of us got some nice pictures. I am certain someone will
post them)
Palm Warbler 1 (the bird circled the boat several times but did not land)
