Greetings...
Whether of not this has been a good year for Brewer's in Fauquier and
Culpeper County is hard to say, as in recent years I'm not entirely sure how
closely scrutinized many of these cattle pastures and feed lots have been.
Some years back, Ken Bass would find Brewer's in the Nokesville area, which
is relatively close to where the Brewer's have been found over the last few
weeks.
Today I found four females and a male in a small feedlot on Elk Run Road
(Route 806), less than a quarter mile west of a dot on the map called Elk
Run. There is an intersection there with Ritchie Road. Ritchie undoubtedly
has a route number, but there was no sign at the intersection, and I don't
have a Fauquier map handy. There is a white rail fence around this
triangular feed lot. There were forty dairy cows in the lot. There are
concrete troughs along one side of it, and lots of mud. The Brewer's were in
with about twenty-five or thirty starlings. Viewing from Ritchie Road is
tough as they drop below or in the trough, completely obscuring the view. I
positioned myself on Elk Run to a point where I could scope them across the
lot, and between cows.
Cheers...
Todd
