A quick trip to Monticello Park in northern Alexandria during the early
afternoon did not turn up anything unusual. There were two or three DOWNEY
WOODPECKERS and a PILEATED WOODPECKER as well as a pair of MALLARDS and a
pair of NORTHERN CARDINALS and sparrows.
From there, I headed to Belle Haven Marina to check on the OSPREYS (three
pair, including one bird that fished a branch out of the Potomac). There
were two or three active BELTED KINGFISHERS there, as well as FISH and
AMERICAN CROWS and several MALLARDS. The highlight there, though, was the
female RED-BREASTED MERGANSER that literally flew into view in my lens. I

I also swung by Ben Brenman Park, where the LESSER SCAUP are still hanging
out (four males).
