All,
It looks as if it is just about time to call this year's spring migration,
at least at Monticello anyway. Today's birds included: Cooper's Hawk (this
spring's "park greeter"), Eastern-Wood Pewee, Gray-cheeked/Bicknell's Thrush,
Swainson's Thrush, and Chestnut-sided (f), Black-throated Blue (m), Blackpoll
(m&f), and Canada (f) warblers.
Between March 1 and May 30, 2005, 114 species, including 28 warbler species,
were seen at Monticello. In a park about the size of a postage stamp,
Monticello continues to be a great spring birding venue for veteran and
recreational birders alike.
There are just to many birders to thank for their efforts at Monticello this
spring. If you participated in this year's informal survey effort, if you
contributed either a credible observation and/or a verified 05 spring survey
record, or if you helped another birder get on a bird at Monticello, thank
you.
Monticello's remarkable 05 spring birds included:
Great Egret
American Woodcock
Black-billed Cuckoo
Least Flycatcher
Philadelphia Vireo
Bicknell's Thrush
Golden-winged Warbler

Broad-winged Hawk
Olive-sided Flycatcher*

Best Views:
An Acadian and Least Flycatcher perched together in adjacent understory,
both waiting to get into the stream; good looks on consecutive days of
Yellow-throated Vireo; stunning looks at a Philadelphia Vireo; Tennessee
Warbler in
the low canopy; two Nashville Warblers in the same glass, with a third
Nashville vocalizing nearby; bathing m & f Blackburnian and Bay-breasted
Warblers;
unobstructed views of both m & f Mourning Warbler - in and out of the stream
(an obvious embarrassment of riches); great views on consecutive days of a
Lincoln's sparrow, any life bird you happened to pick up, and of course, Betsy
Sue "B" Bear, birding from the bridge.
Best Singer:
Northern Waterthrush
