Last Friday, May 27, at 5:05 p.m. I observed a non-adult MISSISSIPPI =
KITE in low-altitude flight along Rt. 617, 0.6 miles west of Rt. 20 in =
Buckingham County in central Virginia. I was on a low-traffic gravel =
road so I stopped the car, got out and observed it for over a minute as =
it kited and whirled not fifty feet above me. The bird was mostly dark =
with indistinct narrow bands in the tail. When it left my field of =
view, it was heading northwest.
In some parts of Virginia, this might not be too exciting, but this is =
only the second one I've ever seen in central Virginia (after seeing =
thousands during my years on the Gulf Coast). Interestingly, the first =
one was a similar-looking non-adult (first summer?) on June 3, 2002, =
within a calendar week of this sighting.
