Greetings to all:
On Sunday morning at 1050 hrs, I arrived at Runt Powell's farm on Wolf Trap
Rd in Halifax Co. where I first found Mississippi Kites in June 1998. I had
made a couple of tries earlier this spring on finding the kites but had no
luck. Since it was a bit breezy again, I decided not to worry about trying
to find any warblers and just go for the kites and by 1055 hrs, I spotted my
first kite.
I was found flying over the Banister River WMA just down the road from
Runt's farm. Within the next quarter hour it flew back to across the RR
tracks to where they are usually found.
I soon had to leave to head home for any early lunch, picked up my window
mounted scope and returned by 1130 hrs.
At 1132 hrs, I had an adult Bald Eagle flying around and then at 1135 hrs I
found the kite again.
Around 1200 hrs, I found what I thought was a second kite but wasn't sure
because it could have been that the first kite duck down under the trees and
then reappeared back up again. It was at 1230 hrs and I had a kite and an
adult Bald Eagle in my scope together flying around for just about 3 seconds
before the flew to far apart.
At 1300 hrs I finally had the two kites flying around together so now I knew
that I did have two kites and not just one.
Also seen during the afternoon was a flock of about 30 Bobolinks as the flew
across the fields and out of sight.
Although it was a good day for warblers, it turned out to be a GREAT day for
birding.
