Hi VA-Birders:
Last week hubby and I had a whirlwind tour of the Delmarva
Penninsula and CBBT culminating at Va. Beach. Target bird of trip:
Sedge Wrens at Eastern Shore NWR. After getting detailed and quite
accurate directions from Calvin Brennen and Bob Ecke who were banding
there and incidentally found me a nice tri-colored heron and prairie
warbler, we headed down the "ramp" road to the spot where they had been
seen and heard, and, sure enough, there they were, making their kik-kik,
kik-kik, vocalizations, but try as we might, we couldn't get an eyeball
on them.
Finally, as it had begun to heat up to the furnace-like temps of
that day and the birds had stopped chipping, we gave it up and headed for
the CBBT where we enjoyed really close-up looks at oystercatchers, and
fairly close looks at RB merganzers and common loons -- no eiders of any
kind.
Then, after checking into the Surfside Oceanfront Hotel which has
an atrium-like lobby with all kinds of little trees and bushes, we headed
out for din-din, and as we were exiting the elevator, something flashed
across in front of us and landed on the little retaining wall holding up
the mini-forest. It was the teeniest wren I had ever seen, and as I got
my binnoculars on it, I began babbling to my husband, "Oh, you're not
going to believe this!" Because,..... yes, it was a Sedge Wren! The
poor little thing had been there for 2 days, but a woman at the desk who
was in charge of itinerant birdies was keeping watch over it and said
that when it got tired enough she would remove it from the atrium just as
she had all the other birds that had come in there. I did my part by
getting a phone number from the people at the Waterfowl Museum 2 doors
down that she could call for extra help; so hopefully I've paid my debt
to my little life sedge wren for his part in my life bird miracle.
