VA Birders,
I was not disappointed when I got up about 6:30 and went out into the
backyard by a quarter to 7:00. Within minutes a Yellow-throated Warbler had
appeared in the Black Walnut tree. A second one would show up later.
An Eastern Wood Pewee kept flitting around the yard picking up insects.
An Eastern Kingbird landed in the top of a White Pine. When I got the binocs
on him I saw two more. These three would increase to a flock of 8 before the
morning was finished.
A flock of about 12 Robins sat in the tree tops and warmed themselves in the
first rays of sunlight. While scanning them with the glasses I realized that
one was different. It was an immature Baltimore Oriole.
A couple of Tennessee Warblers picked caterpillars from the leaves in a
walnut tree.
A female Yellow Warbler landed momentarily in the top of the apple tree,
then flew on.
Three Scarlet Tanagers in fall plumage chased each other back and forth
across the yard.
Two Blue-gray Gnatcatchers fed near the Tennessee Warblers, which caused a
confrontation then a chase with the Gnatcatchers in pursuit. When the chase
ended in the apple tree a Black-throated Green Warbler suddenly appeared in
the picture. One of the Gnatcatchers then gave it a chase. Another
Black-throated Green would come through later.
Almost immediately a Chestnut-sided Warbler also flew into the apple tree.
It fed there a few minutes before losing itself in the nearby woods.
A Worm-eating Warbler Warbler flew to the top branches of a walnut tree and
fed there, when not being harassed by a Red-eyed Vireo.
Later, on the other side of the house in the cherry tree a male Hooded
Warbler hopped among the branches, but left quickly when a flock of House
Finches flew into the tree to get to a feeder.
I wonder what tomorrow morning will bring.
