VA-Birders,
This year my McLean VA inside-the-Beltway backyard suet feeders have had the
greatest diversity of bird species at my in the 20 years I have lived here.
Six of the seven woodpecker species have visited, with five visiting daily
(N. FLICKER is the rare visitor). There is a daily visit from RUBY-CROWNED
KINGLET(s), and weekly from BROWN CREEPER, SONG and WHITE-THROATED SPARROW.
Add in the dozen common visitors and I have diverting activity every day.
The only down side this year is the dead YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER
(contributed to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History) and the curious
CAROLINA WREN that wanders inside the garage if the garage door is open.
No warblers or orioles yet.
I cannot attribute the greater species count to cold weather, because the
parade started in December and has continued through the sleet storm.
I am looking for a great count to submit to the Great Backyard Bird Count
this weekend. Actually it starts today.
Go to http://www.birdsource.org/gbbc for details.
Happy President's Day,
Paul Mocko
McLean, VA
