VA Birders,
17 birders participated in the Nothern Virginia Bird Club's trip to Occoquan
Bay NWR this morning (May 14). The weather started out cool, but warmed up
significantly by late morning. We started birding in the parking lot and
then walked up Easy Road (The first left as you are walking towards the
Gazebo).
At the port-a-john at the end of Easy, we turned right, continued along the
water, and eventually looped back to the parking lot. We were all happy to
find that the area was quite birdy, especially Easy Road. After the main
walk, some of us checked out the Driving Loop with more good results. All
told,
we tallied 67 species. Highlights included WARBLING VIREOS on a nest,
PROTHONATARY WARBLERS coming in and out of a natural cavity nest in a tree at
the
end of Easy Road, a WILSON'S WARBLER (Lifer for me), several YELLOW-BREASTED
CHATS, a YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOO, and lots of BALTIMORE and ORCHARD ORIOLES. On
the Driving Loop, some of us got great looks at a KING RAIL walking around
out in the open near the road. Here is the list for the main part of the walk:
