This morning from 0530 to 0745 Gene Burreson and I conducted the second of
our three volunteer tidal marsh breeding bird surveys in Mathews County (a
project of the VA
Bird Conservation Initiative).
We did point counts along the upper portions of Garden Creek (GC) and the
road leading to Bethel Beach (BB). Notable sightings from the morning follow:
Clapper Rails - still more or less everywhere (two walked within 15 ft of us)
King Rails - 2, one at BB and one in GC
Seaside Sparrows - at least 3 along the road to BB (but much quieter than
last time)
Sharp-tailed Sparrow - 1 at GC; as with last time, this bird sounded like
exactly like a Nelson's, but we never got him out of the grass
Least Terns - an obviously mated pair working GC (with very little water in it)
Greater Yellowlegs - 1 at GC
Eastern Kingbirds - 2 pairs, one at BB and one at GC
Brown-headed Nuthatch - 1 at GC, going in and out of a nest hole
Summer Tanager - 1 at GC
Blackpoll Warbler - 1 at GC
Prairie Warbler - 2 at BB
Marsh Wren - 1 at BB
