Hello, birders.
I spent a couple of hours at Mason Neck SP yesterday
doing my Bald Eagle survey. I surveyed from the end
of the Kane's Creek Trail, next to the blind which
overlooks the mouth of Kane's Creek and much of
Belmont Bay. I saw much more variety standing in one
place for two hours than I did in hiking the Bayview
Trail on Saturday morning.
The highlight was 1 immature Red-headed Woodpecker
near the end of the trail, calling often. I thought I
heard 1 or 2 more but I couldn't be sure. 89 Ruddy
Ducks were far out in the bay. 2 Pied-billed Grebes
were swimming together. Gr. Horned Owls were spookily
hooting from the woods.
Park staff told me that a mostly white Bald Eagle has
been seen at the park lately. Unfortunately, I
haven't seen it. It reportedly has a pied look about
it.
The complete list is below. Most of these birds were
seen/heard from the survey spot.
