VA BIRDers,
Continuation of the Mason Neck surveys described here previously. Started
the Great Marsh trail at 0615 (a bit late) and then point counts on High Point
Rd to the visitor center. On foot along Bayview Tr. Then, point count in
forest into field area with a short walk to an overlook on a nearby marsh. New
arrivals for this area are: Solitary Sandpiper (Great Marsh), RT Hummingbird
(nest building), E. Wood Pewee (on time), Swainson's Thrush (Great Marsh Tr),
Black-throated Blue (several places), Blackburnian (end of Bayview Trail),
Summer
Tanager (south visitor center area parking lot), Rose-breasted Grosbeak
(singing many minutes at end of Great Marsh Tr), and Indigo Bunting. Missing
are
all diving ducks, only one species of dabbler, Herring Gull, Fish Crow, E.
Towhee, and Song Sparrow (!). Weak numbers on woodpeckers (nesting and feeding
young now), gulls and terns, and White-throated Sparrows.
