Hello, birders.
I hit a few spots quickly on Mason Neck today.
At Meadowood SRMA (off Belmont Rd.) I heard a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER. Blue Jays
and woodpeckers were numerous, esp. Flickers. I was especially looking for
sparrows here. Sparrows seen and heard were Chipping, Swamp, Song,
White-throated and Junco.
At Mason Neck NWR I walked the Woodmarsh Trail to see what early waterfowl
might be in the Great Marsh. Mostly Canada Geese, with Wood Duck, Am. Black,
Mallard and G.w. Teal. I was hoping for Hermit Thrush in the woods here but I
didn't get any. I've hardly had any brown backed thrushes this fall.
I checked out Belmont Bay at Mason Neck SP. About 200 Ruddy Ducks were out
there, in 2 rafts. One raft of 95 scaup were present, too far for me to ID to
species. 50 Canada Geese and 1 COMMON LOON were present, also. A Great Egret
was across the bay, on the Prince William Co. side.
