I went to the Great Marsh at Mason Neck late yesterday
afternoon, mainly to see if the tundra swans were
still there. They were. I could hear them whistling
even before I got to the main viewpoint. I counted
194 total, although I had to squint through the
setting sun. I think morning would provide much
better viewing conditions. Other interesting birds
seen were as follows:
3 very vocal greater yellowlegs (early migrants?);
13 snipe - they all flushed at once and flew off in a
small flock over the woods;
one male hooded merganser;
6 green-winged teal;
a small flock of common mergansers;
loads of black ducks, plus a few mallards;
2 adult bald eagles;
an immature red-tailed hawk;
one great-horned owl heard on the way out;
one fantastic sunset.
