[va-bird] Manatees at Crystal River

Sorry for the group off-topic post but it seems many are interested. I
haven't read the entire string of messages but it looks the places I have
birded have been covered (Corkscrew was a personal favorite, and I also used
the ABA Birdfinding Guide). I would add, in case it wasn't already, that
you can snorkel with the manatees at some places, one I know of is near
Crystal River on the gulf coast well north of Tampa. I have been to several
of the best-known wildlife experiences on many continents, and this ranks up
there to me as one of the best, up-close wildlife interactions there is,
anywhere, comparable to swimming with the sea lions in the Galapagos (they
are much slower, though). Whether it is too up-close, and therefore
harmful, I am not sure, but I suppose it does help to ensure that some
people there have a financial stake in protecting them.

I got my FL Scrub Jay at Oscar Scherer State Park south of Sarasota, where I
think they are fairly common.

I think I might have gone with this place, but I am not sure.

Subject: [va-bird] Thanks and Manatees

Hello VAbirders,

My thanks to everyone who has sent FL birding info both onlist and
offlist. And thanks to Michael for starting the ball rolling!

Someone asked about seeing manatees. We'll be camping at state parks a
large part of the time and in my research I found that manatees have been
known to spend the winter months at Blue Spring State Park in Orange City,
FL. (Orange City is due west of the New Smyrna Beach/Canaveral NSeashore
area, about 25-30 as the hummer flies.)

For more info--------

Thanks to everyone on the list for being patient with us soon-to-be Florida
explorers. :-)
