VA BIRDers,
Rich Rieger and I visited the New York Monument area of Manassas Battlefield
this morning, plus visits to Deep Cut. Then we moved onto North Fork Wetlands,
some Fauquier Co locations and then Thompson WMA. Since we were thinking, "why
not a hundred species" we sped to the Potomac River and visited Dyke Marsh,
Fort Belvoir Accotink Bay Refuge (rarely reported for reasons we do not
understand) and then Huntley Meadows. We did manage a hundred species for day
(nothing planned) but only a few highlights. Before the highlights, the BIG
MISS: FISH CROW. Yep, you got it. I guess Fairfax County's crow eradication
program is going well!
The highlights: Green Heron at No. Fork Wetlands, Mute Swan on a pond on
Harrison Rd (escapee?), great duck showing at Accotink with Wood Duck, Gadwall,
Am. Wigeon, Am. Black Duck, Mallard, Blue-winged Teal, No. Shoveler, No.
Pintail, and Green-winged Teal present, a few small Broad-winged Hawk kettles,
Sora at Huntley, Solitary Sandpiper at No. Fork wetlands, Spotted Sandpiper on
the Harrison Rd pond, YB Cuckoo at Manassas Battlefield, Red-headed WP at
Manassas Battlefield, Blue Jay tally 250, Common Raven nr I-66, Red-headed
Nuthatches at Manassas Battlefield, fine showing of Palm Warblers incl 5 at Ft
Belvoir (first western subsp. noted), single Savannah Sp at North Fork
wetlands, beautiful juvenile plumage Swamp Sp at North Fork showing buff
colored throat, and a Baltimore Oriole at Manassas Battlefield.
