Today, Thursday 26 Feb, Carolyn Williams and I saw in Manassas a lone
displaying HoodedMerganser at Comfort Inn and the Red- Necked Grebe swimming on
Logan'sLake along with an American Coot, a Bufflehead and 5 Hooded
Mergansers.RIng-billed gulls were fighting it out with Mallards over seed on
thebank .We also
saw one gull holding onto the tips of another gull'stertial feathers and
dragging it out of the way in it's fight to getat the food.
We carried on to Leesburg , out to Montresor Road to wait for the ShortEared
Owls. While waiting we saw several skeins of geese in thedistance following
the course of the Potomac River, probably 200 in all. Also hunting the fields
there were a Harrier and several Red-TailedHawks. Red-Winged Blackbirds were
in
full song and Mallards could beheard on the pond . Around 6.15 pm we heard
at least 2 Short-EaredOwls calling across the field opposite the entrance to
the farm. In thedusk we saw them gliding over the field before it became too
dark tosee them properly and they seemed to stop calling to each other. Thisis
the first time we had heard the 'barking ' call . Well worth thecold wait
Sylvia
