Gwen Petitjean caught up with me as I was strolling around the boardwalk at
Huntley this morning.
When we reached the approach to the tower and looked out over the sign to the
central pond, Gwen spotted a male Bufflehead. It was very close to shore. We
had excellent, rather close-up views. I'm sure I've never seen one this close
winter. We saw it again later on our return from the short woods loop. This
time it was just to right of where you enter the woods to approach the tower,
and it was sitting on a log preening. (time frame: approx. 9:35-10 am)
We were both very surprised to see this bird here in late June. If anyone
knows whether or not this is fairly common occurrence or rather unusual, I'd
love to hear from you, and will pass the information on to Gwen ?
