I arrived at Philps Wildlife Management area at 6:30 this morning. I was
concerned about the morning being overcast, but actually it just prolonged the
morning action and kept the temp pleasant. Large volumes of several species
were observed. The wetlands water level is down about 2 ft., hopefully because
of
management practices. I saw 4-5 large groups(25-30) of Yellow-rump Warblers
that had a few other mixed warblers tagging along which is where I saw and
heard 3 Magnolia Warblers. The first 1 hr or so it was hard to hear any birds
because of the volume of Wood Thrushes(40+). Yellow-billed Cuckoo(2) Rose
breasted
Grosbeaks(5) and a Summer Tanager were nice additions. The only shorebird was
Solitary Sandpiper(18). In the trees by the water was a large group of Rusty
Blackbirds(30+). Other birds of interest were:
Yellow-Breasted Chat(6)
Black-throated Green Warbler(4)
Prairie Warbler(18)
Common Yellowthroat(26)
Pine Warbler(15)
Parula Warbler(14)
Black and White Warbler(8)
Hooded Warbler(23)
Ovenbird(5)
American Redstart(5)
Yellow-rump Warbler(150+)
Great Crested Flycatcher(11)
Catbird(3)
Bob White Quail(one covey)
White-Eyed Vireo(42)
Red-Eyed Vireo(18)
Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers(to many to count)
RC Kinglets(more)
White throated Sparrows(even more)
