I spent a little over two hours at low tide this afternoon observing the birds
at Lynnhaven Inlet. There wasn't anything unexpected but seeing some of the
shorebirds in breeding plumage was a treat. I saw at least two late female
RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 8 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS (my FOS - most in brilliant
breeding plumage), my FOS SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 2 SPOTTED SANDPIPERS (these were
a surprise to me since this is not freshwater), 9 DUNLIN (also a sight to see
in breeding plumage), my FOS LEAST TERN (Hey, I bird the Piedmont - this is my
first trip to the coast this spring!). Unfortunately the peeps were too far
away for me to identify. My species list follows.
