The Lynchburg Bird Club sponsored the areas's 64th Winter Bird Count on
December 18. Although all checklists have not been received yet,
preliminary data indicate a total of 82 species. Probably the most
interesting bird is a Selasphorus sp. (almost certainly a Rufous) that is
visiting a feeder in Lynchburg. A hummingbird first appeared there in
late November of 2003, was counted on last year's census, and stayed
through at least mid January of 2004. A bird (presumably the same one)
again showed up at the same feeder just prior to Thanksgiving this year,
and is still there. Other species of interest on the Lynchburg Count
were a Gray Catbird (last reported on the 1993 Winter Bird Count) and a
lingering Brown Thrasher.
