VA-bird,
This evening, having nothing better to do, I decided to check out Great
Falls NP for a little while. Noteworthy was a Louisiana Waterthrush along
the swamp trail, which gave a few call notes in response to my screech-owl
imitation and then disappeared. This is about 5 days earlier than I usually
have them here, but I've never looked for them this early so it's hard to
say exactly how early it really is for them. I'm not sure whether the bird
has started singing in the mornings yet, but I'm guessing it is very newly
arrived and will be relatively quiet for a few days. In typical years,
several waterthrush are singing on territory along the swamp trail by the
last weekend in March so next Saturday should be prime time for them here.
I doubt spring is really coming any earlier this year than most, but it sure
feels like it.
Alex
