Though still in recovery from his Big Year, Todd Day was able to join me in
birding the back roads of Louisa County today (25 January). The most
interesting bird we found was a Blue-headed Vireo along SR 612 about 2 miles
north of US 33 that gave us brief but clear views. Otherwise, we spent a fair
amount of time trying to overcome the haphazard access along the south shore of
Lake Anna, fighting to i.d. distant waterfowl and gulls. On the visible,
unfrozen parts of the lake we saw several Common Loons and Horned and
Pied-billed grebes and a modest assortment of ducks. Just south of the main
entrance to the nuclear power plant there were three Pine Warblers feeding on
the ground along the shoulder of the road, and along SR 601 at the Little River
was a Red-headed Woodpecker. A check of the Short-eared Owl spot of previous
winters north of Zion Crossroads produced a male Northern Harrier but no owls.
