[va-bird] Loudoun and Fauquier Counties, 25/26 August 2002

Greetings...

On Sunday, Ian Topolsky and I checked the turf farms along Loudoun County
Parkway just south of Route 7. We were pretty thorough, though didn't linger
long at the northern most fields as there were radio controlled airplane
people flying their craft over the field. The fields had dried quite a bit
since Saturday. The area around Smith Switch Road that had thirty or so
killdeer on Saturday have about ten. Killdeer were scattered along most of
the turf and dirt areas. Other birds in the area were a Red-shouldered,
three Red-taileds, a few Kestrels, and a Sharp-shinned Hawk. Nearby at the
two large ponds in front of the WorldCom complex we had 55 Killdeer, 200
Canada Geese, and two Spotted Sandpipers.

In Prince William County we had a pair of Vesper Sparrows on private land.
From here Ian departed, and I checked the pond in Opal and the turf farms
near Remington in both Fauquier and Culpeper Counties. At Opal with my dad,
we ran into Jon Little. Birds here included 58 Killdeer, two Least
Sandpipers, a Solitary Sandpiper, a Spotted Sandpiper, a few Green Herons,
and a Kingfisher. The turf farms near Remington were next, and other than
sixty or so Horned Larks, there was nothing notable on them. We had several
flocks of Killdeer flying over head, numbering between ten and fifteen for a
total of 51 birds. The parking area along Marsh Run for Phelps WMA had a
calling Screech-owl at about six PM.

Lastly, this evening I stopped at the pond in Opal, finding no killdeer, a
couple Green Herons, a Kingfisher, two Leasts, one Solitary, and one Lesser
Yellowlegs.

Cheers...

Todd
