[va-bird] Loudoun Turf Farm, Opal Pond, 29 August 2002

Greetings...

This morning I met Sue Heath at the sod farms along Loudoun County Parkway.
We were there at about six-thirty, and stayed to eight-thirty. Bob Abrams
joined us and was still searching for stuff when we left. He mentioned
something about stringing a good bird or two, so be warned.

The American Golden-Plover found yesterday by Sue was seen again, and another
bird flew into the same area. The three Baird's sandpipers were about as
good a view of them that you can get, right along the road, ten to twenty
yards in, foraging beside Leasts. An added bird today was one adult Stilt
Sandpiper still retaining some of its barring on the underside. There were
two Semipalmated Plovers, about sixty Killdeer, six Lesser Yellowlegs, one
Solitary Sandpiper, about a dozen or more Least Sandpipers with only one
adult, and three Pectoral Sandpipers.

Last evening and this morning I checked the pond behind the East Coast gas
station in Opal. The water level is completely back to full. Same mix of
birds both days were present. Four Solitaries, two Spotteds, two Leasts, a
Semipalmated Sandpiper and a couple of Green Herons.

Cheers...

Todd
