On walks through the woods, fields and stream bottoms of my Lincoln
neighborhood the last two days, I saw many nice birds, but mostly winter
holdovers rather than new arrivals. The exception was the Phoebes, of which
there were an abundance. Highlights were a Winter Wren almost at my feet,
later heard singing, two Swamp Sparrows in beautiful fresh plumage,
Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker, a very vocal Hairy Woodpecker, two flocks of 6
Golden-Crowned Kinglets, two Fox Sparrows, Wood Duck and Hooded Merganser
sharing the beaver's pond, and discovery of this year's nest of our perennial
Red-Shouldered Hawks.
