I would add a couple of spots to Scott's list.
First though, you might want to also check out the Loudoun Wildlife
Conservancy website, www.loudounwildlife.org as they do field trips all
over the county.
Horsepen Preserve, owned by the local Homeowner's Association, is immed.
west of Algonkian Park & is rich river bottomland.
Immed. west of Banshee Reeks is the Dulles Wetlands (The Woods Road, which
the Banshee Reeks Nature Preserve is on, becomes Oatland Mills Road & the
Dulles Wetlands is on the east side of it). The dirt roads are nice here,
esp. in migration.
The Lucketts area is also good though it is rapidly developing & losing
wonderful wildlife habitat daily. Both Beaverdam & Lucketts are in Claudia
Wilds' book n birding in the Wash. area and in David Johnson's Guide to
Birding VA.
The Appalachian Trail can be accessed from several locations in the County &
is great for a lot of the nice deep woods birds. For example, I freq. find
nesting Black and White Warblers, Worm-eating Warblers, Ovenbirds, etc. on
the path from Snickers Gap up to Bear's Den. The AT here is actually in
Clarke Co., but other parts of it north of Snickers are in Loudoun County.
The Blue Ridge Center for Environmental Stewardship is in far north-western
Loudoun County - the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy leads bird walks there
periodically.
I also recommend birding the dirt (& other less-traveled) rural roads in
western Loudoun, i.e., near Snickers Gap, as you can pick up some nice birds
along the roads. I see Loggerhead Shrikes every once in a while.
Red-headed Woodpeckers are common on some of these roads.
There is also good birding from the W&OD, esp. where it is not too
developed. The area immed. east and west of Leesburg are still good. Both
are on the Central Loudoun CBC and the trail right east of Leesburg is
usually pretty productive.
