VA Birders,
I went to Roaches Run Waterfowl Sanctuary in Arlington Co., across from
National Airport, about midday (and at mid-tide) today, Saturday, Jan. 17. The
pond had quite a lot of ice on it, but it also had some open water,
especially across the back and in scattered patches. I saw an amazing number
of birds
there, including a Green-winged Teal, which was a new county bird for me. I
checked the gulls carefully, but only found the 3 basic species. Birds of
interest (most numbers over 2 or 3 are approximate) included:
Pied-billed Grebe - 3
Double-crested Cormorant - 1
Great Blue Heron - 33
Black-crowned Night-Heron - 2
Canada Goose - 200 (about 80 on the pond and the rest flying over)
Am. Black Duck - 2
Mallard - 90
Northern Pintail - 3
Green-winged Teal - 1
Hooded Merganser - 42
Ring-billed Gull - 125
Herring Gull - 20
Great Black-backed Gull - 8
I also saw a Beaver sitting just out of the water across the pond.
