This morning I spotted a Loggerhead Shrike perched on a wire on Nace Road in
Botetourt County. The wire crosses the front yard of a small brick house with
a green road sign saying Barn Road. This road serves as a driveway to two
houses and a very large gray barn sitting behind the houses. The property is
adjacent to a former beaver pond. When I got the car turned around the bird had
moved from the wire but I relocated it in some fruit trees in front of the
second house. Once it flew to the ground to apparently grab an insect. This is
the
third or fourth time I've seen one on this road over the past several years,
so hopefully there's at least one pair here. Other birds of interest here were
a Willow Flycatcher, a Yellow-throated Vireo, and a Yellow-billed Cuckoo with
no tail feathers. Nace Road can be accessed off of Route 11 North of
Troutville. Look for a sign saying Camp Bethel.
