Hello VA-Birders:
My family and I decided to head for Montresor Road north of Leesburg for the
Loggerhead Shrike, since, being originally from PA would be a life bird for me.
We were very happy to find it along the "second" hedgerow past the green barns
on the right. It was perched in the branch of a small tree just above the
hedgerow. We saw it for several minutes and got it in the scope, but then it
decided to take off for the hedgerow closer to the barns, where it sat for
perhaps 15 minutes. It appears to be moving back and forth between the two. A
scope helps because it can be a fair distance to the opposite hedgerow
depending on where it decides to perch.
We decided to take Route 7 to get back home, and we spied a Merlin perched near
the road in Ashburn. There were many Red-tails, Kestrels, and a Red-shouldered
Hawk along the route back to Arlington as well.
