[va-bird] Re: Least Tern at Huntley Meadows Park, 06/23/03

Gene Keefe, Barbara Perry, and Mary Floyd led the Monday Morning Birdwalk at
Huntley Meadows Park this morning, June, 23, 2002, from 0700 to 0900. The
sixteen observers were treated to a view of a tern fishing over the Central
Pond.
The small bird whose body was smaller than that of a Belted Kingfisher had
black on the head, a white body, black on the upper primary wing feathers, and
a yellow bill; the bird was identified as a Least Tern. This was not a new
record for the Park, nor was the observation common.
Gentle reader, I am just a humble chemist and know nothing of birds. I am a
beginning birder. Pete Dunne is said to have said, "A beginning birder is one
who makes dozens of mistakes; an expert birder is one who makes thousands of
mistakes." I can, do, and will make mistakes in reporting these observations
to you. I report the results of the Monday Morning Birdwalk at Huntley
Meadows Park as a service to the birding community. Please, do not kill the
messenger.
