On Saturday, June 26th, Clyde and Alan Kessler, Brian Kane, Bruce Grimes
and I found a Ring-necked Duck on a small pond in an industrial park in
Henry County. As we were watching the duck, a small tern flew over. We
were able to observe this bird in flight through binoculars for 2-3
minutes at a distance of 100-300 feet until it was driven off by Barn
Swallows. We all noted its yellow bill, black cap, pale gray upperparts
and white underparts. The bird appeared to be barely twice the size of
the Barn Swallows. The bird departed swiftly towards the southwest and
we were unable to relocate it.
The Ring-billed Duck is a first summer record for the county, the Least
Tern a first county record and one of very few in Va away from the coast.
