VA Birders,
Saturday morning, Sep. 4, Leni Friedman and I saw a Least Flycatcher at
Fort C.F. Smith Park in Arlington Co. This small flycatcher had a large white
eye-ring. In fact, I think it must have been as large as any I have seen on
an empid. flycatcher. The bird was gray overall, with a white throat, and we
were able to observe it for some time as it flitted around, catching bugs and
even what appeared to be a small butterfly, in the goldenrod, sumac, and other
vegetation behind our Bird Stream. I thought it was interesting that at least
2 other Least Flycatchers were also reported in Northern Virginia on
Saturday, so I decided to report this bird as well.
The only warbler we saw at the park on Saturday was an Am. Redstart.
This bird must have been a young (2nd year?) male, as it had the red-orange
sides
of an adult male, but otherwise was still in the immature (1st-year) male
plumage.
