After a summer hiatus from local birding (trips to Colorado, Maine, and
Arizona) I visited Metz Wetlands and Neabsco Creek this morning. I saw 2 least
bitterns at Neabsco. I caught one as it dropped into the cattails, and the
other as it winged across the spladderdock for quite a distance. Also at
Neabsco were half a dozen Forster's terns and 3 great egrets. There were quite
a few birds at Metz, although they were not singing much. Vegetation is the
densest I have ever seen it. Many of the birds were young, including a
red-tailed hawk, pewee, yellowthroat, brown thrasher, catbird, and white-eyed
vireo. I also saw an empid with a few downy feathers on its head and a very
thin eye ring. I believe it was a willow flycatcher, but it did not call.
