I am now in the last stage of the 2003 Common Nighthawk season-
determining a departure date. Every evening I check the nocturnal feeding
area at Tyson's Corner, Fairfax Co., VA. On Oct. 1, I had one bird. Didn't
check again until Oct. 5. To my surprise since it had been unseasonably
cold (more like winter) I found one nighthawk. Also had one the next
evening. Last night 10-07 with warming temperatures there were 4 nighthawks
over the buildings, so migration isn't over yet.
I haven't made the final tabulation yet but at my regular watchsite in
Fairfax City I counted about 1270 nighthawks for the season-my second
highest total since 1999 .
