Greetings,
After seeing the Lapland Longspurs (life bird), Snow Bunting, and Horned
Larks down in Remington this morning (Thanks, Todd!), I thought I'd check out
the Brewer's Blackbird spot in Nokesville. Just after passing Brentsville
High School on Aden Rd. (Rt. 646) in Nokesville, I saw some birds flush from
an old corn field on the east side of Aden Rd. I slammed on the brakes,
whipped out the scope, and saw 21 Lapland Longspurs mixed in with about 100
Horned Larks. The field is at the intersection of Aden Rd. and Parkgate Dr.
(Rt.653). How awesome is it to see a life bird in two counties on the same
day? Shortly after that, I found another field about 1/2 mile east from that
intersection that also held Longspurs (4) and Larks (7). Flocks were going
back and forth so if you don't see them in one area, check out the other
fields along Parkgate.
Continuing on down to the dairy farm on Fleetwood Dr., I ran into Sue Heath
already scoping out the Brewer's Blackbirds foraging along the cow paths. I
saw at least 12 but it was hard to get an accurate count since the birds
spent time down in the troughs.
I hope some of you have a chance to bird out this way this weekend. The snow
covered fields are so pretty!
