[va-bird] Lapland Longspur, Fauquier County

All,

I was fortunate to see a Lapland Longspur in Fauquier County this
afternoon at the sod farms near Remington. The bird was foraging in and
around a muddy spot in the corn field just past the bend in the road
that leads along the east side of the sod farms from Sumerduck Road.
There may have been a second longspur but all the birds in the field
spooked before I could get a decent look at it. Also present were
15-20 Horned Larks, 2 Wilson's Snipe, many Mourning Doves and Eastern
Meadowlarks. Most of the fields are snow covered but it's melting fast
and there are many patches available for foraging that can't be seen
from the road. Todd and Mike Day and myself were unable to refind the
longspur about an hour later. A flock of larks spooked from the field
as we watched and there was at least one longspur type bird in with them
but they never landed where we could see them.

In Culpeper County along Thoms Road (near the sod farms on Newbys Shop
Road) there was a nice flock of American Pipits, 3 Wilson's Snipe, and
about a dozen Killdeer with two Northern Harriers keeping them all busy.

Ya'll have fun on the pelagic tomorrow!
