Happy Spring...
Spent about thirty minutes from five-thirty PM on today at Lake Pelham in
Culpeper County. Notable for me was my first Piedmont Osprey. Also on the
lake were 21 Canvasbacks, 3 Lesser Scaup, 4 Greater Scaup, 19 Red-breasted
Mergansers, 24 American Coot, 4 Wood Ducks, 3 Pied-billed Grebes and 3 Mute
Swans. Two Mute Swans are always present at the lake, this is the first time
I have seen three except at the end of breeding (though it would be very easy
to miss a third or fourth). I've visited this lake a few times over the last
few months, finding none of the above mentioned waterfowl or grebes aside
from the swans. The Red-breasted Mergansers seen on Germantown Reservoir
were gone less than 24 hours later when Sue Heath checked on them. It seems
the stop-offs for these migrants doesn't last but an evening.
There were scores of Cedar Waxwings hanging around in trees and flying about
the lake, and a similar number of American Robins dotting the lawns nearby.
It happens a little later, but it is nice seeing some of these birds on the
Piedmont. I am always thrilled with my first-of-spring Piedmont Osprey.
Cheers...
Todd
