Philip Kline and I did some scouting for The Plains CBC on Sunday. Any
volunteers to join us on the 15th in Sector 6 would be welcome. Highlights
of the 7-woodpecker and -raptor day included:
Vint Hill
1 red-headed woodpecker
6 savannah sparrow
6 horned lark
1 kestrel
1 hermit thrush
Burwell Rd.
1 fox sparrow
30 waxwings (in a tree over the road -- excellent open sunroof views, until
we were bombed into submission)
2 red-shoulders
1 harrier (adult male)
Buckland Mill Rd.
1 fox sparrow
1 hairy woodpecker
2 red-shoulders
Stonewall Golf Club
2 red-shoulders
2 red-tails
1 harrier
1 kingfisher
Lake Manassas
150 common mergs
5 hooded mergs
20 mallards
5 black ducks
4 pied-bill grebes
Canada geese
1 or 2 bald eagles
1 great blue heron
Robert Trent Jones Golf Club
1 security guard
We also stopped by the Nokesville longspur site, and were rewarded with at
least 3 laplanders amongst the 80 or so horned larks and 20 meadowlarks.
Interestingly, we had five raptor species in the 20 minutes we spent there:
red-shoulder, red-tail, harrier, kestrel, and accipiter sp. Four minutes at
the Brewer's blackbird site failed to produce any.
